Wrapped in towels, smelling like bubblegum, pink and warm, Bunny surveyed her new bedroom.

‘Oh. My. God.’

A huge bed — much bigger than king-size — in the corner of the room. It was set with pink sheets and a big unicorn body pillow. The carpet between her bare toes was stupidly plush, and with each step, she sank down as though she was walking on marshmallows.

In the middle of the bed was a large, dolphin stuffie with long-lashed eyes and a cute little smile.

‘Who’s this?’

‘Him? That’s Yuri.’

‘Yuri?’ she snorted.

‘He’s Russian.’

‘He’s not!’

‘I am indeed!’ said Takis, in a stupid Russian accent. It was almost like his normal, Greek voice, but a little more guttural.

Bunny grabbed Yuri and snuggled him tight. ‘Well, he’s the best Russian dolphin I ever met.’ Yuri’s eyes had stupid-long lashes, and he looked as happy as an dolphin ever had.

‘You’re not too bad yourself,’ replied Yuri, using Takis’ voice.

As she cuddled her brand new, adorable, stuffie, Bunny let her eyes wander over a wall of kids’ books, a toy chest stuffed to bursting with board games, jigsaw puzzles, plastic trinkets. She couldn’t wait to explore.

‘This place is amazing.’

‘Glad you like it. Been waiting for someone just like you to share it with.’

‘Can I play? Can I play?!’

Takis checked his watch. ‘It’s already ten, little rabbit. Bedtime.’

‘But, but, but…’

‘No buts, or you’ll have a very sore butt.’

Bunny huffed.

‘I tell you what, though. You choose one book, and I’ll read it to you.’

‘Ooohhhhh…..’ Bunny sprang towards the bookshelf. There were so many amazing titles to choose from. Then she saw it. Where the Wild Things Are. Not the same edition as hers, of course. But it’s what she wanted to hear right now. ‘That one, please.’

‘Oh, good choice,’ Takis said. He pulled the book out. ‘I was an angry kid,’ he said, sitting down next to the massive bed. Bunny crawled up its huge sides. ‘Took me a while to figure out that anger wasn’t — in itself — bad. It’s what I did with that feeling. That’s why exercise is so important to me.’

‘I can’t imagine you as a kid,’ Bunny said, snuggling up.

‘No?’

‘You’re such an obvious grown-up.’

‘There’s no such thing as a grown-up,’ Takis said. ‘Not really. It implies the process of growing-up is somehow finished. But it never stops. And it slides forward and backward too.’

‘Hmmm,’ said Bunny. ‘I think I know what you mean…’

With a look of glee, Takis jumped up onto the bed and settled next to her. His body was hard against hers and she was desperate to wriggle back into him. But she resisted.

‘Now,’ Takis said, ‘I’m gonna try some voices. But… I’m out of practice.’
